It was a stall where everything was sold for a penny. It catered to all the needs of a common man. From household essentials to screws, and nails each item could be bought for just a penny. This stall was opened by a Russian born Polish refugee named Michael Marks. The stall was opened in the streets of Kirkgate market in Leeds. Today we know this great foundation by the name Marks and Spencer. One of the greatest retailers in Great Britain, Marks and Spencer contact number is of great use. You can call them to answer any query related to their retail store.
It can be for any business or personal issue that you might have encountered while buying products from their stores. Michael marks opened more stalls in the market after the success of his first one. There were many of them across North West England. Seeing the success of such a different idea, Thomas Spencer decided to invest in this business. In the year 1894 Thomas Spencer and Michael Mark joined hands and their first store was opened. It was opened in one of the best places possible, 21 Cheetham Hill Road, Manchester. Soon the business grew to be a unique one and generated lots of revenue.
In the year 1911 both of them bought a retail chain named Arcadia. It was in the year 1926 that they started buying products directly from the manufacturer. It is a practise they have till date. Though today it has become a popular practice, at that time it proved out to be their unique feature. Their tradition of doing this has helped them a lot in growing their business to be one of a kind. Marks and Spencer sold their goods under the label St Michael. On the other hand their woman and girl’s clothing were sold under the label St Margaret. It was a practise in the 1950s.
However, as they progressed further they named their whole range of goods as St Michael. This name was becoming increasingly popular, hence the naming was done. They have always been an excellent brand for quality British goods. In the year 1953 they started a slogan which said “The customer is always and completely right!” They also started a policy of instant refund whenever their customer lodged any complaint against their product. It became the first store to ban smoking in its premises in the year 1959.
It went on making many achievements to its name. They took good care of their customers, staff and everyone related to their business in some way. It was a unique business sense they started and till date no one has been able to match them. Therefore Marks and Spencer continues to be a big brand name in Great Britain. Everybody is aware of their business success all over the world. Their chain of retail stores set the fashion of starting such stores in every city. When they were doing it there was no one of that kind. Today they have around 895 stores in more than 40 countries all over the world.
